We’ve all struggled with issues of not feeling good about ourselves or how we look in the mirror. Maybe this is something that has been an ongoing battle for you, or maybe it’s a newfound struggle that you’re dealing with on your fitness journey.

If you’re going through this right now, know that you are not alone. In fact, as a weight loss coach, body insecurity is something that I’ve dealt with and continue to deal with from time to time—we all do.

With that said, here are some ways you can overcome body-insecurity and start crushing your fitness goal once and for all.

Start with your mindset.

Have you ever heard of the phrase, “you’re your own worst critic?” This is the truth in so many different ways when it comes to body image. Oftentimes it’s ourselves who are looking in the mirror and making negative remarks about the way we look and feel.

We’ve become so accustomed to seeing the ideals of a “perfect” bikini body on television shows, magazines, and now on social media, that it’s become so easy for us to compare and pinpoint the things that we don’t love about ourselves.

The first step, though easier said than done, is trying to shift our mindset away from those negative and comparative beliefs, and start reminding ourselves that all women come in different shapes and sizes. That is what is REAL. Being happy, healthy and confident in yourself no matter what you look like is what matters the most.

Create performance goals.

One amazing way you can start shifting your mind away from the numbers and the scale is by setting performance goals.

Let’s say one of your performance goals is that you want to be able to master a challenging yoga pose within the next three months. You’ve determined the larger goal that you want to achieve, then you can start creating shorter term goals to help you get to that point.

These short-term goals may be spending three to five minutes a day on that pose during your practice. That way, you’re putting in the work each day to make it to your larger, long-term goal, you’re challenging yourself, and you’re becoming stronger along the way.

Remind yourself how far you’ve come.

Dealing with body insecurity while working to achieve your fitness goals can get tough. Remind yourself that it’s called a “journey” for a reason.

Think about where you were in the beginning of your fitness or weight loss journey compared to where you are now.

Sure, there may have been changes or bumps in the road, but the important part is that you’re still making progress, you’re aware of what your end goals look like, and you’re determined to get stronger mentally and physically. That’s something to be proud of!

Keep a fitness journal.

One thing that can be helpful in having physical proof of your progress is by keeping a fitness journal.

This doesn’t have to be anything fancy—it can simply be a notebook or pen and paper. In the fitness journal you can use it to track your reps, your mood, weight levels for strengthening exercises and so much more.

That way, when you look back at the month you started recording some of this information, you can see how far you’ve come, how you’ve gotten stronger, and see how capable and worthy you are right in front of your eyes.

Give yourself grace.

Lastly, the most important thing when it comes to overcoming body insecurity and achieving your fitness goals is giving yourself grace.

Your body is worth so much more than what it simply looks like. Think of all that it’s been through and how it’s still working hard to be able to allow you to move each day.

The same goes for your fitness journey. If it were easy, we’d all be feeling out best every day and in the best shape of our lives. Progress is not linear, but at the end of the day, you are still ultimately moving forward, showing up, and that’s all that matters.
