How many of you have a closet full of clothes, but still have a hard time determining what to wear each day, or struggle to feel confident in your outfits? You may even be holding onto clothes that no longer serve you or clothes that you are saving for when you get to your goal weight.

Anyone who has experienced any of the above knows how emotional the act of confidently dressing yourself can be whether you’re on a weight loss journey or are navigating through a society that emphasizes looks and appearance.

The most important thing to remember is that you and your body are NEVER the problem. Learning what works for you can make the biggest difference in feeling more confident in how you show up in your life.

Deciding what you want

At the end of the day, what so many of us want is to feel our best no matter where we are in life. Whether that be in pictures, at work, on vacation, we want to feel confident and comfortable in our own body and skin. Unfortunately, it can be such a struggle to get there.

The first step is deciding what you want. Once you’ve made your decision on what you want whether that is just simply feeling good in your body or in other aspects in your life, you’re setting yourself up for the journey and the steps that it takes to get to where you want to go.

Celebrate where you’re at right now

Many of us probably have some old clothes that we hold onto when we were at a bigger weight, we have the clothes that fit us now, and we have clothes that we are saving for when we hit our goal weight.

The most important time in our weight loss journeys is to embrace our bodies not in the “after,” but during our weight loss journeys. It’s important to show up as confidently as we can using what we have at this very moment.

Dress as if it is the “after.” Celebrate where you’re at, how far you’ve come and don’t be afraid to go and get that new outfit you have your eye on. Self-acceptance is key to owning who we are and feeling good in where we are at now.

Building a transition capsule

A transition capsule can be such a key part in inspiring and motivating you to get dressed. This is a specific wardrobe that includes a very limited amount of interchangeable pieces. In the end, you get a certain number of outfits that you can wear.

The reason this can be useful is that it can encourage and motivate you to keep going on your weight loss plan. It can help raise your energy and help you feel as though you’re on the right track with your journey without having to worry about the past with old clothes or the future with “goal clothes.” This is just another part of the process that can keep you focused on the present moment.

Letting go of what doesn’t serve you

If you take a look at your closet right now, there may be a lot of pieces that aren’t currently serving you. Sometimes that act of holding on to pieces that are either too big or too small for us currently can bring our energy down the longer we hold onto them.

While it can be hard, accepting what isn’t going to fit you and letting go of it can be such a transformative, powerful step in feeling closer to your truest most best self.

It can make you feel both physically and mentally lighter now that you’re letting go of a weight that may have had a hold on you for months or even years. This alone can give us  tremendous power back in our journeys.

Confidently dressing ourselves is not easy. It can take time to get there but it is possible. All it takes is coming to terms with ourselves and who we are, and doing what we can to celebrate our unique selves with what we have.
