Summer is right around the corner and it’s around this time that so many of us start to feel an array of thoughts that can really take a toll on our confidence.

After all, it is the season of shorts and bathing suits, and when we’re not feeling fully confident in ourselves already, the simple thought of those things can evoke a lot of anxiety.

So, how can we flip that mindset into something positive so that we can be more confident in ourselves sooner rather than later? Here’s how.

Flip your mindset.

You may have heard the phrase, “just flip your mindset,” when you’re feeling down about yourself or your progress.

A lot of times we get in the mindset that in order to be confident, we need to achieve something first. We think that once we get down to a certain size or a certain weight that that is when we’re going to start feeling confident. But, in order to obtain the results that you want you actually have to do the opposite of this, and make positive thoughts your starting point.

No matter what your goals are, having a positive mindset is going to fuel the action needed to your goals into a reality.

What are you saying to yourself everyday?

What we say to ourselves matters. Our negative thoughts and the words that we repeat to ourselves on a daily basis could be the root of what is sabotaging our progress.

Here’s what I mean. Things like saying, “I can’t do this,” “I’m going to fail,” “I have no willpower,” etc. are all going to eventually show up as our reality. We could be working towards a larger goal, but when our mind doesn’t believe we’re capable, how can we expect our actions to follow?

Whenever you feel an onset of negative thoughts brewing, or catch yourself about to say something negative about yourself, interrupt that with something positive. Tell yourself, “I CAN do this,” “I’m NOT going to give up,” “I AM capable,” and see what a difference it makes in your progress. It’s not going to be easy and will take practice, but it is possible.

Progress is better than perfection.

A lot of us have fallen into a mindset of black and white thinking, in other words, looking at things through a lens of ‘pass’ or ‘fail’. We think that if we didn’t do something successfully or if it doesn’t look perfect that we’ve instantly failed and there’s no need to try anymore.

If we look at our goals in that way, you’re never going to make progress because your mind is convincing you that you’re failing since nothing looks “perfect.” It’s important to remember that progress is all a part of the journey. Any step that we take towards our goal, whether we feel it was positive or not, is still a success.

Remind yourself of your successes.

What are the moments in your life where you feel as though you succeeded? It could be your education, your career, becoming a parent, or something else that’s meaningful to you. I can guarantee you have a few.

Never lose sight of your accomplishments. Think about how you were able to overcome some of your most difficult moments and use that as motivation to continue pushing on. If you were able to accomplish that one thing, what’s stopping you from accomplishing the next? Channel this train of thought and use it to fuel your effort to think more positively and feel more confident.

My challenge for you.

There’s one final thing I challenge you to try today. Get out a pen and a paper and fill in the blank, “If I had unlimited confidence I would______.”

A lot of us women have a ton of pressure on us in society to look and feel a certain way.

We’re constantly thinking about what other people think of us and have a fear of judgment that can really set us back a lot.

Our mindset is the one thing that is completely ours and that we have the power to change. We are a lot more powerful and capable than we give ourselves credit for. Whatever we set our minds to, we can and will be able to get it done!
